HISTORY OF HOPE CEMETERY

Officially opened in 1988, Hope Cemetery, is celebrating an important milestone in its history:  For more than 20 years, families have experienced the beautiful and peaceful atmosphere of its 50 acres.   From 1981 to 1987 preparations were made with the City of Ottawa to house the cemetery as we know it today.  Inaugurated and solemnly blessed on September 25, 1988 by Archbishop Joseph Aurèle Plourde, the cemetery was dedicated to the sacred religious function of helping families with their commemorative and memorial needs.  Offering modern facilities, families can enjoy a walk on the spacious grounds, visit the Holy Family mausoleum, columbaria, or the chapel dedicated to Mother Elisabeth Bruyère, foundress of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa.  Hope Cemetery continues proclaiming Christ’s triumph over death and promoting the message of hope.  One of Hope Cemetery’s unique features is the crematorium where the cremation of loved ones is treated with dignity and respect.   This is the only crematorium held by the Archdiocese of Ottawa.  At Hope Cemetery everything regarding cremation is done within the environment of the Catholic tradition. 

Hope Cemetery will continue to be an enduring legacy for future generations, and another visible witness to our Catholic heritage.  Burial of the dead is a sacred work, and a corporal work of mercy that the staff are honoured to perform as an act of love for our brothers and sisters in Christ.
